Heddon On The Wall WI: Celebrated their 90th Birthday in style on Monday, March 5. We had a excellent meal catered by Aston/Buckley Caterers. Our guests included Jacky Wylie and the treasurer from Cresswell House together with presidents from Horsley, Ovingham and Wylam. We were entertained by singer Beryl Amos who was accompanied by Jennifer King on the piano. To finish everyone was presented with a handbag mirror inscribed WI 1917 to 2007.A perfect momento to finish off our 90th birthday celebrations. Tone BraceletGreenside WI: Held their March meeting on Monday March 5 at 6.45pm. Mrs Sheila Robson gave us a very interesting and informative talk with demonstrations on how exercise is a benefit as we grow older.Our competition was a holiday souvenir and was won by Mrs Brenda Bell; in second place was Mrs Thelma Littlejohn and third Mrs Ivy Younger. Our next meeting is held at 1 Barlow View, Lead Road, Greenside, Ryton, same time, on April 2.
Whorlton & Westerhope: President Audrey Dixon welcomed members and the speaker Norman Dunn to the March led flexible strips meeting. Mr Dunn took us all to the Music Hall, a nostalgic entertaining and humorous illustrated talk on the history of this form of theatre. Raffle prizes were won by J. Thompson, M. Dean, I, Dobie and M. Pearson. The competition My Posh Hat was won by M. Ayeres. The evening ended with a film quiz devised by Mrs K Muwat and was won by Mrs I Barclay.
Woodlands Park WI: Met on February 22. Ms Helen Turnbull give a talk about the campaign Smart Justice For Women. If the cycle
embroidered patches of offending and prison can be broken many women go on to lead useful lives. Smart justice is trying to set up rehabilitation programmes similar to one set up in Scotland, so that self-confidence and self-worth can be built up. Many people support this idea and it is hoped it will be eventually set up. Ms Atwell then took questions from the members. Mrs V Grigsby thanked Ms Atwell for her interesting and informative talk. The competition A Fancy Key Ring was won by Mrs M Shields and second was Mrs R McWiggan. The next meeting is on March 22.
