Roundup: Myanmar endeavors for expanding international gem markets

YANGON, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar has been endeavoring for expanding international gem market by joining many world gem shows, and as the latest move, the country is making preparation to take part in a new event in Thailand at the end of this month.
The country's gem traders have vowed to display their quality gems and jewelry in a five-day gem show scheduled for Feb. 28- March 4 in the Thai capital of Bangkok.
Seeking attendance of gems shows in Asian countries like China, China's Hong Kong, Chinese Taiwan and Singapore has been Myanmar's efforts to introduce its quality gems, jade, ruby, sapphire and pearl in the international markets.
rolex replicaIn January this year, Myanmar gems merchants had taken part in a similar show in the neighboring Thailand and the February-March event will be its second attendance during this year.
Myanmar sees another opportunity in Malaysia in April and more in Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates and Oman in the following years.
Domestically, for the development of its gem industry, the State Gems Enterprise has been holding gem emporiums annually starting in 1964, introducing the mid-year one since 1992, and the special one since 2004. On each occasion, the country's quality gems, jade, pearl and jewelry worth of millions of dollars were put on sale, mainly through competitive bidding.
In October-November last year, a 13-day mid-year gems emporium, participated by 2,300 foreign gem merchants, earned a total of 96. 46 million euros (120.5 million U.S. dollars) from the sale of jade and gems out of 8,140 jade lots, 223 gems and jewelry lots and 270 pearl lots displayed.
Meanwhile, the country is making preparations to launch another annual gems emporium, which is the 47th, at the Myanmar Convention Center in Yangon next month.
Moreover, to boost gem industry as well as tourism industry, the authorities have also planned,for the first time,an all-year- round gem show at a Thai-invested Kandawgyi Palace Hotel in Yangon for displaying Myanmar's quality gems to attract more visitors to the country.
With 60 show rooms, the hotel's gem show is expected to open during this year.
Lace wigsMyanmar has a number of jade mining block areas, in which the world's largest jade stone weighing about 3,000 tons was discovered in Phakant in 2000.
The giant jade stone, measuring 21 meters long, 4.8 meters wide and 10.5 meters high was found at a depth of 12 meters underground.
In January this year, Myanmar found another raw jade stone, claimed to be the second largest one mined in the same Phakant area in the past decade.
The second jade stone weighs 115 tons.
The country also claimed that it possesses the world's largest ruby weighing 21,450 carats, the largest star sapphire weighing 63, 000 carats, the biggest peridot weighing 329 carats and the
embroidered patches biggest pearl weighing 845 carats.
There are six mining areas in Myanmar under gem and jade exploration, namely, Mongshu and Namhyar in Shan state, Mogok in Mandalay division, Khamhti in Sagaing division, Moenyin and Phakant in Kachin state.
