Those with smart phones can check email, surf the internet and consult a diary, all on a handheld device. Jane Bolton reports. F irst there were Apples, then came the Blackberrys, but if you thought keeping your technologies up to date was just for fruits, then you had better think again!

There's no escaping that mobile phones have become a standard feature in most women's handbags and men's pockets.

In an age where we expect to be contactable at any hour of the day or night, whether we are at work, at home or out and about, for many, the mobile phone has become their new best friend.

And with the new generation of smart phones, not only can you be contacted over the phone, you can also check your emails, browse on and download from the internet, enter appointments into your diary, and take notes on the job.

With such an array of features at your fingertips, Banquet handbag Handags Replica the only problem is that for workaholics it might be hard to switch off from their day job.

Glen Young, a 35-year-old sales consultant at Harcourts Holmwood, upgraded to a Palm Treo 650 smart phone six months ago and says it is saving him time and is extremely efficient.

"I bought the phone for its digital diary more than anything, and I also wanted email capability, which I haven't actually used yet as I tend to check my emails when I'm in the office or at home.

"However, I'm going over to Australia soon, so I will definitely be looking at my emails while I'm there. It's good to know that I will be able to keep track of what's going on back at the office," says Young.

Today, rather than finding a carpark and checking his bank balance at an ATM, Young will look at his balance on his phone and can even make transactions over the phone's internet if required. "It's great and really saves time."

Young synchronises the diary on his phone back to the one in the office and says it's an invaluable tool.

"Fifteen minutes before I have an appointment, a digital voice notifies me that I'm due in a meeting. In the past, I would have written appointments on scraps of paper and then put them into my diary; this way I just enter them straight into the phone."

Young has also found the note- taking feature of the phone a handy tool and uses the stylus to draw rough sketches and take notes on properties, such as the number of bedrooms, square metres and so forth.

The Palm Treo 650 also has a camera, and Young can email photos from the phone back to his computer or to friends and family.

"I now take photos at times when I wouldn't have previously as I might not have had a camera on me. It's great for taking pictures of the kids and the quality is good," he says.

Conscious of the fact that the phone retails for about $1000, Young has kept hold of his old phone and takes it out at night, leaving the Treo 650 at home.

Donna Blandford, a 39-year-old who works in the telecommunications industry, is just as enthusiastic about her smart phone -- a 7100v Blackberry.

"I've had it for about two years and I mainly use it for its email function," she says.

While Blandford admits that when she first got her Blackberry she was somewhat addicted to the phone, she says the novelty has worn off.
