Being injured on the job is certainly no vacation

Every time I think relations between the City of Buffalo and its employees can't get any worse, the administration sinks to a new low. The Feb. 15 News article explaining how the city broke the contract with hundreds of its injured-on-duty police officers and firefighters because there "might" be a "handful of them" abusing the system is shameful. If there is fraud being committed, then punish the guilty -- not the honest, Cartier Replica Watches hard-working men and women who unfortunately, while performing their dangerous jobs, were injured.

If you don't like certain provisions in a contract, renegotiate. At least have the integrity and lawful duty to honor a binding agreement. Adding insult to injury, no pun intended, Mayor Byron Brown actually compared being off injured to being on vacation. Having surgery, rehabbing and therapy is not a day at the beach. I'm sure the police have similar restraints. The city hires private investigators to knock on our doors making sure that we are home.

Stop smearing the good reputations of dedicated people who only want to work their shift, knowing that if something bad happens, our contract protects us as we protect our fellow citizens.

New York has no right to raid snowmobile fund

I have been a snowmobiler for about nine years. I am 51 years old and own two sleds. The snowmobiling season starts after hunting season at the end of December and goes into March, if we are lucky enough to have snow and frozen ground. My New York State registration is $45 for each snowmobile and then insurance costs $65 per sled.

The registration fee goes into a fund for local snowmobile clubs and is used for putting up signs, building bridges over creeks and for grooming equipment. That is why we pay so much for registration when we get to play for only 10 weeks -- if there is snow.

Well, our governor is planning to take $5 million from our fund over the next few years, and put it in the general fund to offset the government spending spree here in New York. Now, the way I was raised, no matter how much you need money, just because your mom's purse is on the table, it doesn't mean you have a right to take the money from her to pay your bills. No matter what you tell me your needs are or how you try to justify your actions, stealing is still stealing when you take something for your own use that belongs to someone else.

Moral fiber is lacking, so the abuse continues

In a recent TV interview, Dick Cheney admitted that he was "a big supporter" of waterboarding. He openly admitted to war crimes. Why wasn't he arrested?

Likewise, if the powers that be at the highest levels of moral authority, say, the pope won't fire the lot of the Irish bishops and have them arrested for abetting felony rape, and Obama won't do the same to admitted war criminals, then what do we have left but justifiable rage?

We write letters to the editor and to congressmen to vent our rage, but are we really effecting resolution? Until those in power who could actually do something about this morass actually do something, all we are left with is high blood pressure and animosity in our hearts.
